world’s airlines have agreed to new fuel efficiency and carbon emission targets

GENEVA (Reuters) – The world’s airlines have agreed to new fuel efficiency and carbon emission targets which go much further than the levels required through regulation, an industry group said on Saturday.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents 230 airlines, said that carriers, airports and aerospace firms had pledged to improve fuel efficiency by 1.5 percent a year annually until 2020.

At a meeting in Montreal, they also set a goal of having carbon-neutral growth by 2020 and to record a 50 percent net reduction of carbon emissions in 2050 compared to 2005 levels.

“Airlines have set even more ambitious targets than governments for the longer-term,” IATA Director-General Giovanni Bisignani told reporters on a teleconference.

“No other industry has been able to achieve what we have done,” he said, describing the cooperation between all players in the sector on the environment question. “We are on the high ground and government must now catch up.”

What is Eco Green Travel?

Green Travel focuses on minimising negative environmental impact whilst contributing something positive to the natural and cultural environment.

A green holiday encourages responsible interaction with the environment and wilderness enabling tourists to have a more authentic and rewarding travel experience.

Going green doesn’t mean roughing it, you can experience everything nature has to offer in the comfort of an eco resort, eco lodge or eco hotel, there are plenty of options.

A green holiday encourages a sustainable relationship through choosing more eco-friendly transport options such as public transport (bus and rail), it also encourages walking and cycle activities (which are a lot of fun!)  and looks at ways to make a positive impact on your immediate environment, such as offsetting your carbon emissions and looking at reducing carbon footprints.

There is an ever increasing movement in Hotels too, which are looking at making a more positive on the environment by replacing light globes with eco friendly ones, moving to solar energy, and becoming LEED certified.

So make sure you are always future friendly
