world’s airlines have agreed to new fuel efficiency and carbon emission targets

GENEVA (Reuters) – The world’s airlines have agreed to new fuel efficiency and carbon emission targets which go much further than the levels required through regulation, an industry group said on Saturday.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents 230 airlines, said that carriers, airports and aerospace firms had pledged to improve fuel efficiency by 1.5 percent a year annually until 2020.

At a meeting in Montreal, they also set a goal of having carbon-neutral growth by 2020 and to record a 50 percent net reduction of carbon emissions in 2050 compared to 2005 levels.

“Airlines have set even more ambitious targets than governments for the longer-term,” IATA Director-General Giovanni Bisignani told reporters on a teleconference.

“No other industry has been able to achieve what we have done,” he said, describing the cooperation between all players in the sector on the environment question. “We are on the high ground and government must now catch up.”

International Air Transport Association committed to achieving carbon-neutral by 2020

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that the airline industry is committed to achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2020. The commitment is based on a vision created 2 years ago to achieve carbon-neutral growth on the way to a carbon-free future. IATA four-pillar strategy focuses on:

(1) all industry players on addressing climate change together

(2) a 1.5% average annual improvement in fuel efficiency from 2009 to 2020;

(3) carbon-neutral growth from 2020; and

(4) a 50% absolute reduction in carbon emissions by 2050

In 2009 the carbon footprint of air transport is expected to shrink by 7%. Of this 2% is directly related to efficiency gains from IATA’s four-pillar strategy the reminder is due to the current global economic crisis.

The industry has also done a lot of work on bio fuels which have the potential to reduce our carbon footprint by up to 80% . The IATA has set a target of 10% alternative fuels by 2017. Currently four airlines have tested bio-fuels, making certification a reality by 2011.

AIR NEW ZEALAND FLIGHT SAVES MONEY WITH BIO FUEL TEST

Air New Zealand Boeing 747-400 Rolls-Royce powered test flight last year has found that up to 1.4 tonnes of fuel can be saved on a twelve-hour long haul flight powered by a 50/50 blend of second generation jatropha sustainable biofuel and traditional Jet A1.

The test flight, was carried out on 30 December as part of a drive for more sustainable air travel.

This test programme included extensive on-the-ground and inflight tests of the engine and aircraft components.

During the comprehensive flight test, analysis was carried out at various altitudes and under a variety of operating conditions to measure the biofuel’s performance through the engine and fuel systems.

 The report also found that the biofuel’s properties offer some performance improvements over Jet A1 due to its higher net heat of combustion including: The report says the test flight has demonstrated that more sustainable air travel can be achieved by refiners, airframe manufacturers, engine makers and airlines working together.
