International Air Transport Association committed to achieving carbon-neutral by 2020

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that the airline industry is committed to achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2020. The commitment is based on a vision created 2 years ago to achieve carbon-neutral growth on the way to a carbon-free future. IATA four-pillar strategy focuses on:

(1) all industry players on addressing climate change together

(2) a 1.5% average annual improvement in fuel efficiency from 2009 to 2020;

(3) carbon-neutral growth from 2020; and

(4) a 50% absolute reduction in carbon emissions by 2050

In 2009 the carbon footprint of air transport is expected to shrink by 7%. Of this 2% is directly related to efficiency gains from IATA’s four-pillar strategy the reminder is due to the current global economic crisis.

The industry has also done a lot of work on bio fuels which have the potential to reduce our carbon footprint by up to 80% . The IATA has set a target of 10% alternative fuels by 2017. Currently four airlines have tested bio-fuels, making certification a reality by 2011.
